 What does it all mean?
Are customers finding you? Are your internet sales stagnant? When these and other questions are asked the topic of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) always comes up.
SEO does not come alone, as a matter of fact two other key phrases also follow suit, "Page Ranking and Web Positioning". Now all three terms refer to one thing, your website, but they mean totally different things.
Let’s start at the beginning. You own a website because someone told you that your company should have one for the exposure. Or, because someone told you there is money to be made on the net. Well both reasons are good reasons. At the same time both reasons come with their series of problems!
 So you are an established company and someone has convinced you to start a website. Congratulations, now what? Well you should know that you have just found what is believed to be the number two form of advertising, second only to television. But putting up a website alone will not get you exposure. As far as it goes no one knows you have a website up yet. So you need to tell people about it.
Now comes the hard work, how do you do that? There are of course many ways. We will discuss those soon enough but one of the key ways is to announce your presence via mass e-mail. Organizing an e-mail campaign is simply the best way to inform people of your presence, but it doesn’t come without its own set of draw backs. More on that subject later.
Now let’s take the second example. You sell some sort of product or service and you want to increase your sales by getting customers that do not reside in your area. Will putting up a website increase your sales just like that? Again the answer is no, simply because there are millions of others out there all wanting the same thing.
So what good is your website then? Well both of those situations can change dramatically if you have proper exposure on the web. This requires work and lots of it. The key is SEO, page ranking, and web positioning. So let’s have a look at those three things, starting with web positioning.

When a user gets on the net and types a search query and then hits search, the search engine quickly scans its database to find all the relevant terms related to the user’s query.
It then displays the results. Presto that’s web positioning! Where your site is listed is your web position.

 Next, page ranking, this one is a little more complicated. Where or how your web page ranks is very important because page ranking affects web positioning. Search engines use very complicated algorithms to index websites. Truth be told, no one really knows what they are and many claim that they have the secret of a particular search engine but we are sure that’s not true. We do know that if you do have a good ranking then you will also have a good web position. So how do you get a good ranking? You need to know what that particular search engine likes and doesn’t like to see on your site. Now how do you get all that to work? You need the next step, Search Engine Optimization.

SEO is the process of designing a web page to meet all the criteria of a particular search engine and then making sure the search engine indexes your website by meeting a standard set of rules that it has. But it is not enough. You also need to ensure that you can get a good ranking at the same time. And then repeat the entire process for the next search engine and the next, etc. See there is not just one search engine, in fact there are hundreds! SEO by itself is very complicated and looks at a number of things, including what your site looks like and what is really on your site and does your site actually reflect what you are selling or supplying. In other words content is vital!
You can take on SEO by yourself but then you’ll need months and years of education.
